Which bank should you choose? What documents do you need? Step-by-step guide to opening a Spanish bank account as an expat.

Opening a Bank Account in Spain: 2026 Guide for Foreigners

Why You Need a Spanish Bank Account

A Spanish bank account is essential for:

  • Receiving salary or pension
  • Paying rent and utilities
  • Setting up direct debits (domiciliaciones)
  • Buying property
  • Applying for residency

Trying to manage everything with a foreign account is possible but expensive and inconvenient.

Types of Accounts

Resident Account (Cuenta de Residente)

For those with NIE and proof of Spanish residency. Full functionality, best rates, easiest for daily banking.

Non-Resident Account (Cuenta de No Residente)

Can open with just a passport. Higher fees, some limitations, but useful for property purchases before becoming resident.

Digital Banks

N26 (German)
  • Free basic account
  • Excellent app
  • Spanish IBAN available
  • Limited for certain Spanish payments
Revolut
  • Multi-currency features
  • Not technically a bank account
  • Limited acceptance for some Spanish direct debits

Documents Required

For Resident Account:

  • Passport or EU ID
  • NIE certificate or TIE card
  • Empadronamiento (proof of address)
  • Proof of income (payslips, pension, or bank statements)

For Non-Resident Account:

  • Passport
  • Proof of address in home country
  • Some banks require NIE, others don't

Step-by-Step Process

1. Get Your NIE First

Most banks require this. Without it, your options are limited to non-resident accounts.

2. Book an Appointment

Most Spanish banks require appointments. Call or visit the branch first.

3. Bring All Documents

Original + copies of everything. Missing one document means another trip.

4. Be Patient

The process typically takes 1-2 hours. Account activation may take 1-3 days.

5. Set Up Online Banking

Download the app and register. You'll need this for transfers and payments.

Common Issues

"Your employer isn't in our system"

For remote workers, some banks struggle with foreign employers. Sabadell and BBVA tend to be more flexible.

Tax Identification

You'll be asked about your tax residence. Answer honestly - your country of tax residence is where you spend 183+ days.

Proof of Income

Self-employed? Bring 6 months of bank statements and invoices. The more documentation, the better.

Tips from Experience

1. Start with one bank - don't overcomplicate things

2. Keep a UK/EU account - useful for receiving payments

3. Bring more documents than you think you need

4. Ask about fees - some accounts are free if you meet conditions

5. Consider a local gestor if you're struggling
