Getting Your NIE in Spain: Step-by-Step 2026 Guide

What is the NIE?

The NIE (Número de Identificación de Extranjero) is a tax identification number for foreigners. You need it for almost everything in Spain:

  • Opening a bank account
  • Signing a rental contract
  • Buying property
  • Getting utilities connected
  • Working or self-employment

Getting Your NIE: The Process

Step 1: Book Your Appointment

Website: sede.administracionespublicas.gob.es
  • Select your province (Málaga for Marbella area)
  • Service: "Asignación NIE" or "Certificados UE" for EU citizens
  • Choose date and time
Tip: Appointments are released Monday mornings. Check early.

Step 2: Gather Documents

Required:
  • Valid passport (original + copy)
  • EX-15 form completed
  • Proof of why you need NIE (rental contract, job offer, property purchase)
  • Tasa 790-012 payment receipt (pay at bank first, ~€12)

Step 3: Attend Appointment

Bring all originals and copies. The officer will process your application and you should receive your NIE certificate same day.

NIE vs TIE

NIE: Just the number (on a certificate) TIE: Physical residency card with your NIE on it

EU citizens get a green certificate. Non-EU residents on visas get a TIE card.

Pro Tips

1. Pay the tasa first at a bank - you need the receipt

2. Bring extra copies of everything

3. Consider a gestoria (€100-200) if you want stress-free processing

4. Arrive early - offices can close if overrun
