NIE Application Changes for 2026: What You Need to Know
Spain has updated its NIE application process. Here's what's changed and how it affects expats in Marbella.
What's Changed
The Spanish government has made several updates to the NIE application process effective January 2026. Here's a summary of the key changes.
Online Appointments Now Required
The old system of queuing at the Extranjería office is gone. All NIE appointments must now be booked through the Sede Electrónica portal. The system releases new appointments every Monday at 9:00 AM.
Tip: Appointments go fast. Have all your details ready and be logged in before 9:00.Document Requirements Updated
You now need:
- EX-15 form (download from the official website)
- Original passport plus two copies
- Proof of address in Spain (rental contract, utility bill, or padrón)
- Proof of reason for NIE (property purchase contract, work offer, etc.)
- Payment of the Tasa 790 (currently €12.67)
Processing Times
The official processing time is now 3-5 working days for straightforward applications, down from the previous 2-4 weeks. However, during busy periods, delays still occur.
Our Advice
If you're applying for your first NIE, consider using a gestoria. The process is doable yourself, but a gestoria knows the system and can navigate any complications. The typical fee is €80-150.
